The Recipe for Economic Disaster

9.5 million.

That's the number of American jobs we would lose from the balanced budget amendment provision of the Tea Party economic plan if it were fully phased in by 2012. Passed by the GOP-led House over the summer, it's a proposal that's been endorsed by virtually all of the Republican presidential candidates.

Today we released a report on this unbalanced balanced budget amendment that draws on data from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) August deficit projections for 2012. The results of this report are alarming—and it proves the Tea Party–backed amendment is a recipe for economic disaster.

In addition to costing 9.5 million jobs nationwide, the amendment would force deep cuts to the programs that matter most to middle-class families: education, health care, Social Security, and Medicare. And the GOP's plan would make it easier to make cuts to these security-net programs than it would be to eliminate tax breaks for big oil, insurance companies, and corporate jet owners. Millionaires and billionaires would be protected at the expense of the middle class.

The effect on state economies would be disastrous. Communities throughout the Midwest and Rust Belt that were particularly affected by the recession would each face additional job losses in the hundreds of thousands. Use the interactive graphic above to find out how many jobs your own state would lose if the Republicans pass the Tea Party economic plan.
