Marriage Equality

July 23, 2011 at 2:07 PM

Kudos to Governor Martin O'Malley for committing to getting a marriage equality bill passed in the 2012 legislative session. There is not one logical reason to deny same-sex couples the right to marry. Let's look at some of the more common arguments:

The foundation of society is traditional marriage! Nope. Anyone who has studied history knows that "traditional" marriage isn't what you see in those Nick at Nite re-runs. In many cultures (and throughout the Bible), it was tradition for one man to have multiple wives. Even after monogamy became the norm, marriage was primarily a business transaction. Humans have been redefining "traditional" marriage forever. Try again.

We can't force clergy to perform marriages they find morally wrong! And no one is suggesting we should. After all, does the state force Catholic priests to marry divorced persons? Try again.

It's a slippery slope that will lead to bestiality and incest! 45 years ago, it was illegal in Maryland for people of different races to marry, and this was the argument; today, we shake our heads in disbelief at our parents' bigoted attitudes. 45 years from now, I promise a future generation of Marylanders will wonder what took us so long to shake off this particular form of bigotry. Try again.

The purpose of marriage is procreation! And yet we allow the marriage of infertile couples, those beyond their childbearing years, or those who choose not to have children -- come on, is anyone really still trying to use this one?
