The Role of Central Committee Members
✔ Central Committee members are the grassroots local-elected volunteers of the Maryland Democratic Party, who work directly in the trenches to organize an ongoing presence at the local level. They work to organize and perform the many tasks required to get Democrats elected. In short, Central Committee members are the backbone of the Maryland Democratic Party.
✔ Members are dedicated to their work to ensure the election of Democrats to public office, while encouraging the participation of activists, volunteers and financial contributors.
✔ Members are not managers or members of a board of directors, but the frontline workers themselves. They help organize and fulfill tasks that may include, but not limited to: Fundraising, party visibility at public fairs/festivals, etc., precinct organization, participate in canvassing operations, distribute political literature, voter registration, phone banks, and candidate recruitment. Organizing the tasks necessary for Democrats to be successful in elections.
✔ As a member of the local Central Committee, members are automatic members of the State Central Committee and attend semi-annual meetings, vote on State Party issues and participate in State Party projects.
✔ Members have the official responsibility to fill vacancies of certain offices due to death or resignation of elected officials and fill any vacancy when there is a failure to have a Democratic Candidate file for nomination.
✔ Members also recommends to the Governor appointment of the members and substitute members for the local County Board of Elections and at times makes recommendations to other state and county boards.
